On January 27, the Michigan Strategic Fund approved a USD 4 million grant under the Michigan Business Development Program to support the Volkswagen Group of America Michigan investment. The funding will back a USD 13 million expansion plan aimed at meeting current and future workforce needs while retaining more than 900 jobs across Auburn Hills and Rochester Hills.

State-backed support for workforce and operations

The approved grant is designed to strengthen automotive employment and encourage long-term investment in Michigan. By aligning state incentives with corporate expansion plans, the initiative supports workforce stability while enabling Volkswagen Group of America to adapt its facilities to evolving technical and operational requirements.
As part of the agreement, job retention commitments will extend over a seven-year period. The company is required to complete the planned investment within the first five years, ensuring timely economic and employment impact for the region.

Consolidation into a shared technical campus

Volkswagen Group of America will consolidate its technical activities into a centralized campus model. This approach is intended to improve collaboration, efficiency, and service quality across multiple brands and functions operating under the group’s US umbrella.

Key technical functions to be integrated

The shared technical campus will bring together several core operations, including:
  • Quality and engineering activities
  • Warranty parts return operations
  • Technical service center functions

This consolidation is expected to streamline workflows while supporting consistent technical standards across the organization.

Continued presence in Auburn Hills

In addition to the consolidated campus, Volkswagen will maintain operations at a newer Auburn Hills facility. The site will be optimized to better match space utilization and technology needs, ensuring flexibility as operational demands evolve.
“Michigan has long been an important home for Volkswagen Group of America. We’re thrilled to be able to continue our presence in the state, reinforcing our commitment to our people and advancing our technical capabilities in the state,” said Kjell Gruner, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America.
