Quick Takeaways
- Toyota Brazil flex-fuel R&D lab signals a major push toward advanced ethanol and biofuel technologies.
- The new Sorocaba facility will support local innovation while connecting closely with Toyota’s global engineering network.
On February 3, the President of Toyota Brazil, Evandro Maggio, announced the establishment of a new flex-fuel research and development laboratory in the country. The initiative reinforces the Toyota Brazil flex-fuel R&D lab strategy, aligning local expertise with global automotive innovation as demand for sustainable fuel solutions continues to rise.
Toyota Brazil flex-fuel R&D lab to leverage local biofuel expertise
The laboratory will be located in Sorocaba, São Paulo, a region known for its strong automotive and industrial ecosystem. Brazil’s long-standing experience with ethanol and other renewable fuels makes it a strategic base for advancing flex-fuel technology tailored to regional and global markets.Focus on ethanol, biomethane, and next-generation biofuels
Initially staffed by 40 engineers, the center will concentrate on developing new technologies related to ethanol and other biofuels, including biomethane. Research activities are expected to support efficiency improvements, emissions reduction, and broader application of renewable fuels in future vehicle platforms.Part of a long-term investment and global collaboration plan
The project will operate in close collaboration with Toyota’s engineering teams in Japan and other international subsidiaries. This integrated approach allows knowledge developed in Brazil to contribute to Toyota’s global flex-fuel and biofuel programs while adapting worldwide expertise to local market conditions. The new laboratory forms part of the BRL 11.5 billion investment package for Brazil announced by the company in 2024. Through this initiative, Toyota Brazil aims to strengthen its position in sustainable mobility by combining local innovation, global engineering support, and long-term commitment to biofuel-based technologies.
