BYD Szeged plant begins test production in Hungary

On January 30, Botka László, Mayor of Szeged, announced through a social media update that the BYD Szeged plant in Hungary has officially entered the test production phase. The development signals tangible progress in BYD’s European manufacturing plans and highlights the company’s growing footprint in the region.

BYD Szeged plant workforce and local employment

The mayor stated that 960 people have already been recruited at the Szeged facility, underlining the scale of early operations at the site. Notably, around 70% of the current workforce is Hungarian, reflecting a strong focus on local employment and regional skill development.

This hiring mix indicates BYD’s intention to integrate closely with the local economy while building long-term manufacturing capabilities in Hungary. The approach aligns with broader trends among automakers expanding electric vehicle production in Europe.

Production scope at the Szeged facility

According to the announcement, BYD will conduct the complete vehicle production process at the Szeged plant. However, battery production and chemical industry-related activities will not be part of the operations at this location.
