Quick Takeaways
  • US fast charging network growth hit a record pace in 2025, driven by private investment and federal support.
  • Public EV charging availability in the country is now more than half the number of gas stations nationwide.
On January 28, a U.S. industry report highlighted that US fast charging network growth reached an unprecedented level in 2025, marking the fastest annual expansion to date. The public fast-charging network grew by 30% during the year, adding more than 18,000 new charging ports across the country.

Record expansion of public fast charging infrastructure

The scale of deployment pushed the total number of public fast-charging stations in the United States beyond 13,200. Of these, more than 3,300 stations were installed in 2025 alone, reflecting the accelerating demand for electric vehicle charging and improved nationwide coverage. This surge in US fast charging network growth underscores the industry’s focus on reducing range anxiety and improving long-distance travel for electric vehicle users, especially along highways and urban corridors.

Role of private investment and federal funding

Private capital played the dominant role in expanding EV charging infrastructure, accounting for the vast majority of new installations. However, federal support also contributed to the momentum through targeted funding initiatives.

Contribution of the NEVI program

Approximately 3% of the total growth was supported by the USD 5 billion National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program introduced under the Biden administration. In 2025, nearly 100 NEVI-funded charging stations became operational, collectively adding close to 500 fast-charging ports. While modest in share, this funding helped accelerate deployments in strategic locations, supporting broader accessibility and standardization across the charging network.

Charging network operators scale up deployments

Several major charging network operators expanded their footprints significantly during the year. Alongside the broader opening of the Tesla charging network to additional vehicle brands, other operators ramped up station deployment to meet rising EV adoption. Electrify America, EVgo, and similar providers increased their build-out of public fast charging stations. Meanwhile, Ionna, a newly formed EV charging group backed by major global automakers, deployed 740 charging ports in 2025, marking its first year of operations and a notable entry into the fast charging landscape.

Growth of Level 2 charging and overall station count

Beyond fast charging, the expansion of Level 2 charging stations continued to support everyday electric vehicle usage. According to data from the U.S. Department of Energy, the country now has around 64,000 public Level 2 charging stations. When combined with fast charging locations, the total number of public charging stations in the United States has reached approximately 77,000. This figure now represents more than half of the total number of gas stations nationwide, highlighting the rapid shift in US EV infrastructure and long-term transition toward electric mobility.
