FAW-Volkswagen Electric SUV Project Launched at Tianjin Branch on CMP Platform

FAW-Volkswagen electric SUV development has entered a new phase as FAW-VW’s Tianjin Branch officially initiated a project centered on the VW316/9CN_B vehicle model. This move signals a major step in the company’s electrification roadmap, with a clear focus on scalable platforms and future-ready manufacturing capabilities.

VW316/9CN_B and CMP Platform Strategy

The VW316/9CN_B represents the first battery electric vehicle model to be developed by the FAW-VW Tianjin Branch. Built on the Compact Main Platform (CMP), the SUV is positioned to support flexible electrified architectures while meeting evolving market demand. The model is currently scheduled to enter production in 2027.

Role of CMP in Electric Vehicle Expansion

The CMP platform enables modular production and integration of advanced technologies. Vehicles developed on this architecture are designed to accommodate intelligent driver assistance features, improved efficiency, and future software-driven upgrades without fundamental changes to core vehicle structures.

Tianjin Plant Renovation and Manufacturing Readiness

To support the FAW-Volkswagen electric SUV program, the Tianjin Branch will undertake a comprehensive plant renovation. The upgrade will cover key manufacturing areas, including stamping, welding, painting, and final assembly, ensuring the facility is aligned with next-generation EV production standards.

Production Milestones and Capacity Targets

Following the renovation, the upgraded lines will be capable of mass-producing CMP-based vehicle models. Body-in-white roll-off is targeted by the end of 2026, while volume deliveries of the electric SUV are planned for the second half of 2027, reflecting a phased and controlled production ramp-up.

Product Portfolio Expansion and Electrification Timeline

At present, the FAW-VW Tianjin Branch is producing five vehicle models, with four additional models planned for future production. This expansion supports the broader transition toward electrified and diversified powertrain offerings across the portfolio.

Upcoming Models and Strategic Transformation

In 2026, the Tianjin facility is expected to achieve mass production of two new models: the VW336, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle with roll-off planned in the first half of the year, and the AU336. By 2027, FAW-VW aims to complete the strategic transformation of its entire product lineup, reinforcing its long-term commitment to electrification and advanced mobility solutions in China.
