Quick Takeaways
- Yuchai Flywheel Range Extender System strengthens hybrid and extended-range powertrain options for commercial and non-road vehicles.
- The new system integrates power generation and propulsion through a rigid coaxial architecture for higher efficiency.
Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Group Co., Ltd. introduced the Yuchai Flywheel Range Extender System under the FRS brand during its 2026 global partners conference, marking a strategic step in advancing extended-range solutions for commercial and non-road vehicle applications across multiple power segments.
Unlike the commonly used “engine plus independent motor” configuration seen across the industry, the Yuchai Flywheel Range Extender System is engineered to significantly reduce connector usage. The system applies a rigid coaxial layout that directly links the flywheel to the engine crankshaft, enabling native integration between power generation and vehicle propulsion.
This architecture is supported by an intelligent coupling control algorithm combined with a multi-scenario self-adaptive energy management strategy. Together, these technologies allow the system to respond efficiently to varying operating conditions while optimizing energy utilization and overall drivetrain performance.
Designed specifically for commercial vehicles and non-road machinery, the Yuchai Flywheel Range Extender System covers a broad output range from 15 kW to 600 kW. The solution has already been deployed across multiple sectors, demonstrating its scalability and adaptability for diverse duty cycles and operational demands.
Alongside the system launch, Yuchai also presented an FRS-based engine lineup that includes the YCS04, YCK08N, and YCK16 models. This engine portfolio has been adapted for applications ranging from light-duty buses to heavy-duty mining trucks.
The FRS-integrated engines have been matched with vehicles from several major manufacturers, including FAW Jiefang, Dongfeng Motor Corporation, XCMG, Sany, and Caterpillar, highlighting growing industry adoption of the Yuchai Flywheel Range Extender System across both on-road and off-road platforms.
