Quick Takeaways
  • Lear Corp seating plant will support GM’s Orion Assembly with seats for pickups and full-size SUVs starting 2027.
  • GM’s shift in production strategy has reshaped supplier investments around Orion Township in Michigan.
Lear Corp seating plant plans have taken shape after the supplier secured a major contract tied to new pickup and full-size SUV programs at General Motors’ Orion Assembly in Orion Township, Michigan. The project follows Lear outbidding rival supplier Magna International and aligns with GM’s broader manufacturing realignment in the United States.
Lear Corp seating plant aligned with GM Orion Assembly launch
Lear’s seating plant is scheduled to begin operations in early 2027, matching the restart of GM’s Orion Assembly. The facility will supply seating systems for ICE-powered Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, along with Cadillac Escalade SUVs, ensuring synchronized production as vehicle assembly ramps up.
The timing reflects GM’s decision to prioritize internal combustion engine vehicles at the Orion site, reversing earlier electric vehicle plans and creating fresh opportunities for Tier 1 suppliers focused on high-volume truck and SUV platforms.
Shift from EV program reshapes supplier strategy
Magna International had announced a USD 100 million seating plant in 2023 to support an EV program at the Orion plant. That plan was tied to GM’s earlier electrification roadmap, which later changed after EV tax credits expired.
GM subsequently decided to relocate production of ICE trucks and SUVs from Mexico and Canada back to the U.S. The move came amid pressure from tariffs introduced under the Trump administration, prompting a reassessment of supply chains and domestic manufacturing capacity.
Site selection and just-in-time operations
Lear has been evaluating industrial properties close to Orion Assembly to support a just-in-time seating operation. The company is focusing on a 440,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Auburn Hills, Michigan, previously occupied by Dana Corp., according to three people familiar with the matter.
The proximity is intended to minimize logistics complexity and ensure reliable seat deliveries as GM ramps up truck and SUV output at Orion, reinforcing the strategic importance of the Lear Corp seating plant within the regional automotive ecosystem.
