Quick Takeaways
- H2Accelerate TRUCKS hydrogen trucks project secures major EU funding to accelerate zero-emission freight.
- The initiative targets large-scale hydrogen fuel cell truck deployment across multiple European markets.
On January 27, the H2Accelerate TRUCKS hydrogen trucks initiative achieved a major milestone after securing around EUR 30 million in funding from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership. The support positions the project as Europe’s largest flagship programme dedicated to zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell heavy-duty transport.
The funding will enable the deployment of 125 hydrogen-powered trucks across six European Member States and Associated Countries. The initiative aims to demonstrate that hydrogen fuel cell technology can deliver reliable, long-range, and zero-emission solutions for demanding freight operations.
Alongside the funding announcement, the H2Accelerate TRUCKS project expanded its industry collaboration. Three new truck deployment partners have joined the Volvo Group to strengthen execution and operational expertise:
These additions bring hands-on experience in hydrogen vehicle deployment, fleet operations, and market readiness, further accelerating the project’s momentum. The first hydrogen fuel cell trucks under the programme are expected to begin operations in 2026.
H2Accelerate TRUCKS hydrogen trucks designed for long-haul and regional use
The H2Accelerate TRUCKS hydrogen trucks are engineered to meet diverse heavy-duty transport requirements. Vehicles equipped with 700-bar hydrogen tanks are designed to deliver a driving range exceeding 600 kilometres between refuelling, supporting long-distance freight routes.
The planned fleet composition reflects real-world logistics needs and includes:
By covering both long-haul and regional applications, the project aims to validate hydrogen fuel cell trucks as a scalable solution for decarbonising Europe’s heavy-duty transport sector while maintaining operational performance and flexibility.
