On January 23, Rivian confirmed that production of customer-ready units of the Rivian R2 midsize SUV is scheduled to begin this spring, providing a clearer timeline for a model expected to broaden the company’s presence in more accessible electric vehicle price segments.
The Rivian R2 midsize SUV is currently in the validation phase, with the company assembling test vehicles at its manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois. These vehicles are undergoing extensive evaluation to ensure production readiness before full-scale manufacturing begins.
As part of this process, Rivian has been conducting long-distance testing across the United States. Validation vehicles have been driven on cross-country routes, including sections of the historic Route 66, to assess durability, performance consistency, and real-world driving behavior.
“These early builds represent an important phase in development where we validate and perfect the quality of vehicles coming off the line at our factory. As we head toward the start of production in spring, this continuous feedback loop of testing, refining and updating ensures we are delivering repeatable quality at scale building vehicles that exceed our customers’ expectations,” Rivian said.
Previously, Rivian had indicated that the launch and initial deliveries of the Rivian R2 midsize SUV would occur in the first half of 2026, without offering a specific production start window. The updated timeline adds clarity to the company’s manufacturing roadmap.
Rivian first revealed the R2 in March 2024, positioning it as a more compact and cost-conscious electric SUV. The unveiling also included the following models developed on the same underlying platform:
Together, these models are expected to play a central role in Rivian’s next growth phase, supporting higher production volumes while expanding its footprint in the global electric SUV market.
