  • China vehicle ownership data highlights strong growth in new energy vehicles and city-level expansion.
On January 26, China’s Ministry of Public Security released updated vehicle statistics showing continued expansion in national vehicle ownership, with new energy vehicles playing an increasingly significant role. The data highlights how China NEV ownership 2025 is reshaping the country’s automotive landscape.
According to the announcement, total motor vehicle ownership in China reached 469 million units in 2025. Of this figure, automobiles accounted for 366 million units, reflecting steady growth in personal and commercial vehicle registrations nationwide.
China NEV Ownership 2025 Reaches Nearly 44 Million Units
New energy vehicle ownership climbed to 43.97 million units in 2025, representing 12.01% of total automobile ownership. This milestone underlines the growing penetration of electrified mobility solutions across China’s passenger vehicle fleet.
Battery electric vehicles formed the largest share of the NEV parc. Ownership of battery electric vehicles stood at 30.22 million units, accounting for 68.74% of total new energy vehicle ownership, reinforcing BEVs as the dominant technology within the segment.
New Registrations Reflect Strong NEV Adoption
Vehicle registration data further supports the accelerating shift toward electrification. Newly registered automobiles across China totaled 26.19 million units in 2025, maintaining a high level of annual additions to the national fleet.
Within these registrations, new energy vehicles accounted for 12.93 million units, or 49.38% of all newly registered automobiles. This marked an increase of 1.68 million units compared with 2024, translating into a year-on-year growth rate of 14.93%.
Automobile Ownership Expands Across Chinese Cities
The Ministry of Public Security data also highlighted the widening geographic spread of vehicle ownership. In 2025, 103 cities reported automobile ownership exceeding one million units, an increase of seven cities compared with the previous year.
Among these, 27 cities recorded automobile ownership above three million units, while seven cities surpassed the five million-unit mark. This distribution reflects sustained urban demand alongside continued motorization in multiple regions across China’s automotive market.
