Quick Takeaways
- Tesla Model Y Autosteer is no longer standard on entry-level models in the US, pushing buyers toward paid FSD access.
- The move reshapes Tesla’s ADAS strategy while keeping Traffic-Aware Cruise Control available as standard.
Tesla Model Y Autosteer will no longer be offered as a standard feature on entry-level Model Y and Model 3 electric vehicles sold in the United States. The driver assistance function, known internally as Autosteer, previously helped keep the vehicle centred in its lane by detecting lane markings, nearby vehicles, and objects.
To regain access to Autosteer, buyers must now subscribe to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) package. The subscription is priced at USD 99 per month (approximately Rs 9,100), while a one-time purchase option of USD 8,000 (around Rs 7.34 lakh) remains available only until February 14.
Tesla Full Self-Driving pricing and future plans
Tesla CEO Elon Musk highlighted that the current subscription pricing will not remain static.
“I should also mention that the $99/month for supervised FSD will rise as FSD’s capabilities improve. The massive value jump is when you can be on your phone or sleeping for the entire ride (unsupervised FSD),” Musk tweeted last week.
In India, the Full Self-Driving option for the Model Y is listed at around Rs 6 lakh, although its activation depends on future regulatory approvals.
Traffic-Aware Cruise Control remains standard
While Tesla Model Y Autosteer has been removed from the standard offering, the basic Autopilot suite still includes Traffic-Aware Cruise Control (TACC). This system:
Earlier, the combination of Autosteer and TACC enabled a semi-autonomous highway driving experience, though drivers were still required to stay alert and intervene when necessary.
Impact across Tesla’s vehicle lineup
The update does not affect Tesla’s more premium models. Model S and Model X continue to include Full Self-Driving as standard under the Luxe Package. The Cybertruck range follows a mixed approach, with the base AWD variant offering FSD as an optional add-on, while the top-spec Cyberbeast trim includes it as standard.
Tesla Model Y and FSD availability in India
On the Tesla India website, Autopilot is not listed, and only Traffic-Aware Cruise Control is mentioned among driver assistance features. The Full Self-Driving option is priced at Rs 6 lakh but will be enabled only when Indian regulations allow its use. A subscription-based FSD option is currently not available in the Indian market, and its real-world usability remains uncertain even after regulatory clearance.

While Tesla Model Y Autosteer has been removed from the standard offering, the basic Autopilot suite still includes Traffic-Aware Cruise Control (TACC). This system:
- Maintains a driver-set cruising speed
- Detects vehicles ahead in the same lane
- Automatically adjusts speed to preserve a safe, selected following distance
Earlier, the combination of Autosteer and TACC enabled a semi-autonomous highway driving experience, though drivers were still required to stay alert and intervene when necessary.
