Quick Takeaways
  • BYD EV battery plant Vietnam marks a strategic expansion into Southeast Asia’s EV supply chain.
  • The project strengthens local battery manufacturing to support regional electric commercial vehicles.
BYD EV battery plant Vietnam plans are moving forward as BYD has begun building a battery manufacturing facility in partnership with Vietnamese automaker Kim Long Motor, targeting the rapidly growing Southeast Asian market. The project represents a total investment of $130 million and will be developed in two phases within Vietnam.
Kim Long Motor confirmed the collaboration, stating that the battery factory will be constructed inside its industrial park, where a groundbreaking ceremony was held earlier this week. The facility is designed to strengthen regional EV supply chains and support exports of new energy commercial vehicles across Southeast Asia.
BYD EV Battery Plant Vietnam Capacity Phased Expansion
The battery plant will be developed in two stages, with combined annual capacity reaching 6 GWh once fully completed. Phase one will cover 4.4 hectares and deliver an annual capacity of 3 GWh, primarily supplying batteries for trucks, buses, vans, and other commercial vehicles using new energy technologies.
Phase two will double the plant’s total output to 6 GWh per year, significantly increasing local battery availability for electric mobility programs. The project timeline for commercial operations has not yet been disclosed by either partner.
Phase Land Area Annual Capacity Primary Applications
Phase One 4.4 hectares 3 GWh Trucks, buses, vans, commercial vehicles
Phase Two 6 GWh (total) Electric mobility programs

Manufacturing Collaboration and Market Context
Kim Long Motor stated that it has already developed and produced 34 electric sleeper buses using BYD battery technology, highlighting an existing technical partnership between the two companies. This new battery factory is expected to deepen that cooperation while supporting regional vehicle manufacturing and exports.
BYD has introduced several passenger EV models in Vietnam, including the Atto 3, known as the Yuan Plus in China. Globally, BYD is the world’s largest new energy vehicle manufacturer and the second-largest EV battery producer.
From January to November, BYD recorded EV battery installations totaling 175.2 GWh, securing the global number two position with a 16.7% market share. The Vietnam battery plant aligns with BYD’s broader strategy to localize production and strengthen its presence in high-growth international markets.
