National Green Hydrogen Mission and Investment Outlook
India approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission in January 2023 with the objective of establishing the country as a leading global producer and supplier of green hydrogen. The mission carries an initial budget allocation of Rs. 19,744 crore.
The mission targets annual production of 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030, supported by around 125 GW of renewable energy capacity. The government projects over Rs. 8 lakh crore in investments, creation of more than 600,000 jobs, and avoidance of nearly 50 million metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions by 2030.
As part of the mission, the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition programme has earmarked Rs. 17,490 crore to scale domestic electrolyzer manufacturing and green hydrogen production, reinforcing India’s long-term commitment to building a robust hydrogen economy.
