Quick Takeaways
  • Michelin green tire manufacturing enters a new phase with a major future factory investment in China.
  • Michelin green tire manufacturing strengthens its focus on high-performance tires for new energy vehicles.
Michelin green tire manufacturing reached a significant milestone as the first high-performance, green-manufactured Michelin Pilot Sport 5E rolled off the production line at the Michelin Shanghai Plant in Minhang District. At the same time, Michelin initiated the second-phase renovation and expansion project at the facility, signaling a major upgrade in capacity and technology.
On January 23, the company confirmed that the expansion project represents a total investment of CNY 3 billion and is positioned as Michelin’s first strategic initiative fully planned, constructed, and operated around the “future factory” concept. The project sets a new benchmark for sustainable and intelligent tire manufacturing in China.
Michelin Green Tire Manufacturing Built on the Future Factory Concept
Designed primarily to produce 18- to 24-inch high-performance passenger vehicle tires, the expanded facility will dedicate nearly 70% of its output to tires for new energy vehicles. This allocation reflects Michelin’s long-term strategy to align manufacturing capacity with the rapid electrification of the automotive market.
The future factory approach integrates sustainability with operational efficiency, enabling Michelin green tire manufacturing to scale while maintaining strict environmental and quality standards across advanced tire segments.
Intelligent Manufacturing and Digital Integration
The expansion embeds advanced digital technologies across the production lifecycle, including:
  • AI-based product and process design
  • AI-driven intelligent manufacturing management
  • AI-assisted quality inspection systems

These capabilities are intended to optimize plant construction, boost production efficiency, and significantly reduce trial-and-error costs during ramp-up and ongoing operations.
Data-Driven Operations and Quality Management
Through a fully data-driven manufacturing management system, the project shifts the plant’s operational model from reactive, post-event responses to proactive risk prevention. This transformation supports more stable production coordination, tighter quality control, and consistent output as Michelin green tire manufacturing continues to expand in line with evolving mobility demands.
