Quick Takeaways
  • Kim Long Motor BYD battery factory project strengthens Vietnam’s EV battery localization and supply chain.
  • The project supports electric commercial vehicles and regional exports across Southeast Asia.
On January 27, 2026, Kim Long Motor broke ground on the Kim Long Motor BYD battery factory at its Hue Industrial Park and signed a strategic cooperation agreement with BYD Battery. The milestone marks a significant step in advancing localized battery manufacturing for electric vehicles in Vietnam.
The USD 130 million Kim Long Motor BYD battery factory will be developed in two phases to strengthen in-house battery technology and secure critical components for “Made in Vietnam” electric vehicles. The project aligns with the company’s strategy to reduce reliance on imports while improving cost control and supply stability.
Kim Long Motor BYD Battery Factory Capacity and Phases
  • Phase 1 of the Kim Long Motor BYD battery factory covers 4.4 hectares and is designed for an annual capacity of 3 GWh. Output from this phase will support electric trucks, buses, minivans, and other new-energy commercial vehicles, with a strong focus on regional export markets.
  • Phase 2 will expand the facility’s total capacity to 6 GWh per year, further scaling battery availability as demand for electric commercial vehicles rises across Vietnam and Southeast Asia. This phased approach allows gradual capacity ramp-up while maintaining quality and cost efficiency.

Electric Sleeper Bus Development Using BYD Technology
Beyond battery production, the partnership includes the joint development of a 34-seat electric sleeper bus using advanced BYD battery technology. The model is positioned as the world’s first new-energy intercity sleeper bus, targeting Vietnam and broader Southeast Asian markets where long-distance bus travel remains dominant.
Once operational, the Kim Long Motor BYD battery factory is expected to help the company exceed 80% localization by Q2 2026. The project also supports the creation of a regional hub for battery and electric vehicle manufacturing, reinforcing Vietnam’s role in the evolving Southeast Asian EV ecosystem.
