Quick Takeaways
  • India 30 GHz vehicle-to-vehicle communication road safety MoRTH strengthens accident prevention strategy.
  • The initiative aligns spectrum allocation, AI technology, and nationwide safety coordination.
On January 23, 2026, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways informed the Consultative Committee that 30 GHz radio frequency has been allocated for vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems as part of India’s broader effort to reduce road accidents and fatalities. The move positions India to strengthen connected mobility solutions with a strong safety focus.
Four-Pillar Road Safety Framework Under Review
The Committee reviewed national road safety efforts structured around four core pillars: Engineering, Enforcement, Education, and Emergency Care. As part of this approach, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways is developing AI-enabled road safety technologies in collaboration with IIT Kanpur, with plans to share these solutions with States and Union Territories for wider implementation.
Accident Hotspots and Infrastructure Gaps Highlighted
Members of the Consultative Committee expressed concern over persistently high accident and fatality rates across highways and urban corridors. Key issues identified included:
  • Delays in black spot rectification
  • Highway widening and road maintenance challenges
  • Limited availability of trauma care facilities
  • Compensation delays for accident victims
  • Coordination gaps with State Governments

These concerns underscored the need for uniform execution of road safety policy across regions.
Education, Trauma Care, and Institutional Support Proposals
To address long-term safety outcomes, members proposed integrating road safety education into school curricula, establishing a dedicated Centre for Road Safety, and ensuring at least one trauma centre in every district to improve emergency response times and survival rates after accidents.
Implementation Oversight and Public Awareness Measures
The Minister directed Regional Officers and Project Directors to regularly participate in Members of Parliament Road Safety Committee meetings and ensure that safety interventions are embedded in all ongoing road projects. In parallel, the Ministry has developed a Road Safety Anthem, translated into 22 regional languages, to promote road safety awareness in schools and public spaces nationwide.
