Quick Takeaways
  • Indian Auto LPG Coalition seeks inclusion of Auto LPG in India’s vehicular fuel transition study.
  • Auto LPG highlighted as an immediately deployable, affordable clean mobility solution.
The Indian Auto LPG Coalition has submitted a formal representation to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board, requesting that Auto LPG be included in a comprehensive assessment of vehicular fuel options supporting India’s energy transition.
The study, being undertaken by the The Energy and Resources Institute, is titled Comparative Assessment of Vehicular Fuels in India’s Energy Transition – A Multi-Dimensional Approach. It is designed to deliver evidence-based insights to policymakers on technology pathways for transport sector decarbonisation and long-term sustainable mobility aligned with India’s net-zero ambitions.
The coalition has stated that excluding Auto LPG would leave the assessment incomplete, particularly as the study places emphasis on gaseous fuels and involves city gas distribution stakeholders. According to the representation, autogas already operates at scale in India and offers an immediately available transition option.
Globally, Auto LPG is used by over 30 million vehicles across nearly 80,000 refuelling stations. In India, millions of vehicles run on Auto LPG, supported by close to 2,500 dedicated dispensing outlets. The fuel benefits from the country’s established LPG supply chain, including infrastructure expanded under the Ujjwala Yojana programme.
Suyash Gupta, Director General of the Indian Auto LPG Coalition, stated that the study should remain technology-neutral and grounded in real-world deployment. He emphasized that Auto LPG delivers measurable air-quality benefits in vehicle segments where electrification will take longer to materialise, and excluding it risks overlooking a readily available and cost-effective solution aligned with transition objectives.
The Indian Auto LPG Coalition has outlined three specific requests:
  • Explicit inclusion of Auto LPG in all comparative fuel scenarios
  • Participation of relevant stakeholders to ensure accurate representation of infrastructure, safety standards, and market readiness
  • Application of uniform evaluation criteria across fuels, covering emissions performance, economics, infrastructure preparedness, and adoption potential

The coalition has also offered to share operational data from the Auto LPG dispensing ecosystem, international benchmarks, safety documentation, and to facilitate interactions with oil marketing companies, conversion kit manufacturers, and dispensing station operators.
The Indian Auto LPG Coalition functions as the nodal industry body for promoting Auto LPG in India. Its membership includes public sector oil companies, private fuel marketers, kit suppliers, and equipment manufacturers. The coalition works closely with the World LPG Association and participates in multiple government committees linked to vehicle standards and emissions regulations.
