Quick Takeaways
  • Toray Industries heat-resistant polypropylene release film sets a new benchmark for high-temperature industrial materials.
  • The innovation supports PFAS-free manufacturing across electronics, composites, and battery applications.
On January 23, Toray Industries announced the development of the world’s first 160°C heat-resistant polypropylene release film and confirmed that sample shipments have begun. The innovation expands the company’s advanced materials portfolio and targets applications requiring both thermal stability and clean release performance.
The new product is designed for demanding processes such as IC substrate manufacturing, carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) prepreg molding, and battery material processing. By achieving heat resistance up to 160°C, the film addresses a critical gap where conventional polypropylene films have struggled to perform reliably.
High-crystallinity polypropylene technology
The heat-resistant release film is added to the TORAYFAN biaxially oriented polypropylene (OPP) film series. It combines a high-crystallinity polypropylene material with Toray’s proprietary film-forming technology, resulting in improved dimensional stability and durability under elevated temperatures while maintaining the advantages of polypropylene.
PFAS-free alternative for industrial films
Most high-heat-resistant industrial release films today rely on fluorinated materials. However, the global expansion of regulations on perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is accelerating the shift toward alternative materials. Toray’s polypropylene-based solution is positioned as a practical replacement without relying on fluorinated chemistry.
Commercialization roadmap and growth targets
Toray has already begun proposing the new heat-resistant grade to select customers. The company plans to start mass production at its Tsuchiura plant in Tsuchiura City, Ibaraki Prefecture, in fiscal year 2027. With applications spanning electronics, composites, and batteries, Toray aims to grow this business into one generating revenue of JPY 1 billion by fiscal year 2030.
