Quick Takeaways
  • General Motors Fairfax Assembly production shift highlights GM’s evolving US manufacturing strategy amid tariff and reshoring pressures.
  • The move impacts Buick Envision, Chevrolet Bolt EV, and Equinox production timelines.
On January 22, General Motors announced plans to relocate production of its next-generation Buick Envision compact SUV from China to its Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas starting in 2028, citing tariffs and growing pressure to reshore manufacturing operations to the United States.
The automaker later confirmed that production of the all-electric Chevrolet Bolt EV at the Fairfax facility is expected to conclude in roughly a year and a half, aligning with earlier guidance on the model’s limited production cycle.
“When we revealed Bolt in October (2025), we said and it was widely reported it'd be a limited-run model, which we are bringing back due to strong customer demand. We also said it would account for the majority of EV volume for Chevrolet in 2026, alongside the Chevrolet Equinox EV. We reiterate that today.” a Chevrolet spokesperson said. “We had also previously announced the gas-powered Equinox would be coming to Fairfax in mid-2027 after Bolt production ramps down. Today we’re announcing the next-generation Buick compact SUV will come to Fairfax beginning in 2028.”
Under the revised production roadmap, the ICE-powered Chevrolet Equinox will shift manufacturing to Kansas from Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, reinforcing General Motors’ broader efforts to localize key vehicle programs within the US market.
Fairfax Assembly is currently building the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV, which reached US dealerships earlier in January, operating on a single shift while approximately 900 workers remain on indefinite layoff. General Motors has previously committed to future investments at the Fairfax plant tied to its next generation of affordable electric vehicles, although the timing of those investments has not yet been disclosed.
