Quick Takeaways
  • J.D. Power 2026 U.S. ALG Residual Value Awards underline long-term vehicle value leadership across segments.
  • Toyota and Tesla emerge as top performers in mainstream and premium categories.
On January 20, J.D. Power announced the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. ALG Residual Value Awards, with Toyota leading the mass-market category and Tesla topping the premium segment. The awards spotlight vehicles projected to retain the highest value at the end of a typical lease cycle.
Residual value, defined as a vehicle’s estimated worth after a standard ownership period, remains a critical indicator of long-term affordability, resale confidence, and brand strength. Higher residual values typically translate into lower lease payments and stronger performance in the used-vehicle market.
Toyota secured the highest number of model-level honors, earning six awards across multiple segments. BMW, Lexus, and Tesla followed closely, with three model-level awards each, reflecting competitive positioning across mainstream and premium portfolios.
Toyota and Tesla Stand Out in Residual Value Performance
“Strong wholesale retention, solid brand value and a disciplined approach on rental fleet and incentives propelled Toyota to the top spot among mainstream brands,” said Danny Battaglia, managing director of ALG customer success at J.D. Power. “Toyota topped six segments for 2026, including a four-peat for GR Supra and five-peat for Tundra. Meanwhile, Tesla avoided the high incentives of other luxury battery electric vehicle brands in 2025.”
The disciplined incentive strategy and consistent demand dynamics played a central role in maintaining stronger resale projections, particularly as pricing volatility continued across the broader automotive market.
Model-Level Award Recipients Across 26 Segments
Following an evaluation of nearly 300 models based on used-vehicle performance, brand outlook, and product competitiveness, 14 automakers received recognition across 26 award segments. The 2026 model-level award recipients include:
  • Toyota: GR Supra, GR86, Camry, Sequoia, Tundra, Tacoma

What the J.D. Power ALG Awards Measure
The J.D. Power U.S. ALG Residual Value Awards recognize vehicles projected to retain the highest percentage of their manufacturer’s suggested retail price at open auction after three years of ownership. The methodology incorporates market conditions, brand trajectory, and segment competitiveness to reflect real-world resale outcomes.
As residual values increasingly influence leasing strategies and total cost of ownership decisions, the 2026 results reinforce the importance of disciplined pricing, brand equity, and product consistency in sustaining long-term vehicle value.
