Tesla is preparing a major Tesla Supercharger expansion in California that will significantly increase charging capacity at one of its most critical highway locations. The project involves expanding an existing Supercharger station and introducing high-capacity chargers designed specifically for Class 8 electric trucks.
The Supercharger station in Firebaugh currently operates with 72 charging stalls. Tesla has now filed plans to expand the site by adding 232 additional charging plugs for passenger electric vehicles, along with 16 dedicated Semichargers to support heavy-duty electric trucking operations.
Tesla Supercharger expansion to surpass all existing sites
Once completed, the expanded Firebaugh location will become the largest Supercharger station in Tesla’s global network. This milestone comes only months after Tesla completed its Supercharger Oasis project in Lost Hills, California, which features 168 charging stalls and previously held the company’s capacity record.
The Firebaugh Supercharger sits directly along the heavily trafficked Interstate 5 corridor, one of the most important north–south freight and passenger routes in the United States.
Tesla Semi Program Manager Dan Priestley highlighted the strategic importance of the site, stating, “Lots of trucks to electrify on I-5.”
Charging demand rises as network access expands
The Tesla Supercharger expansion also reflects a broader increase in charging demand across the company’s network. Tesla has opened its Superchargers to several other automotive manufacturers, transforming the system from a proprietary network into a shared EV charging backbone.
This shift has accelerated utilization at key locations, especially along long-distance travel and logistics corridors such as I-5, where consistent high-power charging access is critical for both passenger vehicles and commercial fleets.
Semichargers signal preparation for Tesla Semi growth
The addition of Semichargers at the Firebaugh site is widely viewed as a strategic move ahead of increased production of the Tesla Semi. These chargers are designed to support the higher energy requirements of Class 8 electric trucks operating on regional and long-haul routes.
Tesla has indicated that the Tesla Semi program is targeting a production ramp-up this year at Gigafactory Nevada, making large-scale charging infrastructure an essential part of enabling commercial deployment.
With its location, scale, and dedicated truck charging capability, the Firebaugh project positions the Tesla Supercharger expansion as a key enabler of both passenger EV adoption and the electrification of freight transport in California and beyond.
