On January 23, Nissan announced that it has reached an agreement to sell its manufacturing assets in Rosslyn, South Africa, to Chery SA, the local arm of Chery Automobile. The move marks a significant development in the country’s automotive production ecosystem.
Under the agreement, which remains subject to the fulfilment of specific conditions including regulatory approvals, Chery SA will acquire the land, buildings, and associated manufacturing assets of the Nissan Rosslyn facilities. This transaction also covers the nearby stamping plant and is expected to be completed by mid-2026.
Nissan Rosslyn Plant Sale and Employee Transition
As part of the Nissan Rosslyn plant sale, the majority of employees currently associated with the facility are expected to be offered employment by Chery SA. These offers will be made on substantially similar terms and conditions to those in place today, supporting workforce continuity during the ownership transition.
Nissan Africa President Jordi Vila stated that external factors have had a well-known impact on the utilisation of the Rosslyn plant and its future viability within Nissan. His comments underline the operational and market pressures that influenced the company’s decision regarding the site.
Continued Nissan Presence After Rosslyn Plant Sale
Despite the divestment of manufacturing assets, Nissan confirmed that it will continue to offer vehicles and services to customers in South Africa without disruption. The company also reiterated its product roadmap, with several new vehicle launches planned for fiscal year 2026.
These upcoming introductions include the Nissan Tekton and Nissan Patrol, reinforcing Nissan’s commitment to the local market even as manufacturing ownership at Rosslyn transitions to Chery SA. The Nissan Rosslyn plant sale therefore represents a strategic shift rather than an exit from South Africa’s automotive sector.
