Quick Takeaways
  • Guangzhou Shipyard International World’s Largest Car Carrier HMM sets a new benchmark for automotive shipping capacity.
  • The milestone reflects rising global demand for vehicle transport driven by China’s expanding auto exports.
China’s shipbuilding sector has reached a significant milestone with the rollout of the Guangzhou Shipyard International World’s Largest Car Carrier HMM, a vessel capable of transporting up to 10,800 vehicles. The LNG dual-fuel carrier has officially left the dock, marking a new capacity record for car carriers built in China.
The vessel was constructed by Guangzhou Shipyard International Company Limited for South Korea’s HMM and currently stands as the largest car carrier ever built domestically. According to the shipbuilder, the carrier complies with the International Maritime Organization’s Tier III emission standards, underscoring growing emphasis on environmental performance in global maritime logistics.
Guangzhou Shipyard International World’s Largest Car Carrier HMM Sets New Capacity Record
Before this launch, the highest-capacity car carriers were Anji Logistics’ “Anji Soundness” and “Anji Ansheng,” each designed to carry 9,500 vehicles. These sister ships were previously recognized as the world’s largest next-generation post-Panamax car carriers and remain key assets in China’s automotive shipping ecosystem.
The new 10,800-car carrier significantly extends those limits. Measuring 230 meters in length with a 40-meter beam and a structural draft of 10.5 meters, the ship features a 14-deck configuration that enables flexible loading across multiple vehicle categories.
Key design capabilities include:
  • Efficient transport of electric vehicles
  • Compatibility with hydrogen-powered vehicles
  • Capacity for heavy-duty trucks alongside passenger cars

Expanding Auto Exports Accelerate China’s Shipbuilding Momentum
Guangzhou Shipyard International also reported that another newly built vessel departed the dock on January 21, this time for Singapore-based EPS. The parallel launches highlight how rising automotive exports are directly fueling rapid development across China’s shipbuilding industry.
At present, SAIC operates the country’s largest car carrier fleet, with its subsidiary Anji Logistics managing 41 vessels. BYD has already deployed all eight ships in its dedicated fleet, achieving an annual vehicle transport capacity exceeding one million units. Leapmotor also secured its own dedicated car carrier last year, reflecting broader industry moves to strengthen outbound logistics control.
Together, these developments reinforce how surging global vehicle demand and export volumes are reshaping both automotive logistics strategies and the scale of next-generation car carrier design.
