Quick Takeaways
  • Tesla Cybercab robotaxi production will begin at a deliberately slow pace before scaling rapidly.
  • Elon Musk highlights manufacturing complexity as the key factor behind the gradual ramp-up.
On January 20, Elon Musk said that the early phase of Tesla Cybercab robotaxi production will progress far more slowly than many expect. In a post on X, the Tesla CEO explained that both the Cybercab and the company’s humanoid robot Optimus will experience a challenging initial ramp-up before production speed improves significantly over time.
Responding to a post suggesting Cybercab production could begin in under 100 days, Musk noted that Tesla Cybercab robotaxi production speed is heavily influenced by manufacturing complexity. He stated that production velocity is inversely proportional to the number of new components and manufacturing steps involved, underscoring why early volumes remain limited.
The post also featured a video showing Cybercab production activity at Gigafactory Texas. Tesla has previously highlighted this facility as a key site for advanced manufacturing processes tied to its next-generation vehicle platforms.
Musk has earlier outlined Tesla’s “unboxed” production method, claiming it could allow the Cybercab to roll off the line in under 10 seconds, compared with around 34 seconds for the Model Y. The long-term ambition is an even shorter cycle time of approximately five seconds once operations fully stabilize.
Despite these targets, Musk clarified that April 2026 production will not reach sub-10-second cycle times or high volumes. Instead, Tesla Cybercab robotaxi production in the initial months is expected to total only thousands of units rather than tens of thousands. “For Cybercab and Optimus, almost everything is new, so the early production rate will be agonizingly slow, but eventually end up being insanely fast,” Musk wrote.
Tesla has reiterated that it remains on track to begin Cybercab volume production in 2026. Meanwhile, output of the Optimus humanoid robot is expected to start later, with Musk indicating that manufacturing could begin toward the end of the year, subject to development and production readiness.
