Quick Takeaways
- Mercedes-Benz CLA electric sedan India to become the brand’s new entry model
- Mercedes-Benz India shifts away from entry-level price wars with portfolio consolidation
The Mercedes-Benz CLA electric sedan India launch will be the German luxury carmaker’s most significant introduction in the country this year. Beyond being a new model, the CLA signals a fundamental shift in Mercedes-Benz India’s entry-level strategy by replacing multiple existing products.
The upcoming CLA will take over from the A-Class sedan and the electric EQA and EQB, streamlining the lower end of the portfolio. This move aligns with Mercedes-Benz India’s broader focus on strengthening its presence at the higher end of the luxury market, which contributes the bulk of its revenues and profitability.
Entry-Level Luxury Segment Pressures Shape Strategy
At the company’s annual sales event held earlier last week, Managing Director and CEO Santosh Iyer revealed that Mercedes-Benz experienced a 23 percent decline in its entry-level segment during 2025. This space has seen intensified competition, particularly as BMW gained traction with models such as the 2 Series and the iX1.
Rather than engaging in aggressive pricing battles, Mercedes-Benz India is deliberately stepping back from discount-driven competition. The company believes sustained price wars in this segment create long-term challenges beyond immediate sales numbers.
“We are seeing a lot of discounting and price wars in the entry-level segment, and we would like to stay away from that. The fundamental issue is not just profitability but also the residual value of cars. The brand also takes a hit in the process,” explained Iyer.
Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric Sedan India to Consolidate Portfolio
Despite moving away from heavy discounting, Mercedes-Benz is not exiting the entry luxury space altogether. Instead, the brand plans to consolidate its offerings around the CLA, which will serve as the single, next-generation entry point.
“The new CLA will replace the A-Class, EQA and EQB in our line-up. This is only the logical thing to do, as the new CLA is based on a next-generation platform,” said Iyer.
Alongside the CLA, the ICE-powered GLA is expected to continue unchanged, ensuring the brand maintains a balanced presence across powertrains at the lower end.
Pricing and Positioning of the New CLA in India
Currently, Mercedes-Benz India’s entry-level range starts with the A-Class sedan priced between Rs 44.46 lakh and Rs 45.92 lakh. The EQA is priced at Rs 67.20 lakh, while the EQB ranges from Rs 72.80 lakh to Rs 78.90 lakh.
The Mercedes-Benz CLA electric sedan India pricing is expected to be around Rs 60 lakh. While this raises the entry point to the brand, it positions the CLA competitively against the fully imported EQA and EQB, while offering a more advanced technology package.
Technology-Led Value Over Volume Approach
Mercedes-Benz believes the CLA’s latest-generation architecture will justify its premium positioning. The model will feature the new MB.OS software stack, advanced AI assistance, and an Nvidia chip, marking a significant leap over outgoing entry-level products.
“With the latest-generation MB.OS, AI assistance and Nvidia chip, the CLA will be a latest-generation car. Can we match our rivals selling at a lower price? Maybe not. But we would want to play on our strengths, and we’ll surely prioritise value over volume,” said Iyer.
By consolidating its entry portfolio and focusing on technology-led differentiation, Mercedes-Benz India aims to protect brand equity while adapting to evolving dynamics in the luxury EV and entry-level premium segments.
