Quick Takeaways
  • SAIC Motor autonomous mining trucks project targets large-scale unmanned mining deployment in Xinjiang.
  • The initiative strengthens intelligent manufacturing, regional operations, and the autonomous mining ecosystem.
On January 16, SAIC Motor Corporation Limited announced the signing of a strategic cooperation framework agreement involving SAIC-Hongyan Automobile Co., Ltd., Shanghai Utopilot Technology Co., Ltd., and the National Xinjiang Zhundong Economic-Technological Development Park. All participating companies are subsidiaries under SAIC Motor, reinforcing a coordinated group-level strategy.
The agreement focuses on accelerating the large-scale application of unmanned driving technologies in mining areas while simultaneously supporting intelligent equipment manufacturing and the rollout of regional operating networks. This collaboration is positioned as a key step in scaling industrial-grade autonomous solutions within demanding mining environments.
SAIC Motor autonomous mining trucks production and deployment plan
Under the framework, SAIC-Hongyan will invest in a driverless mining truck integration project at the Zhundong Development Park. The planned facility will have an annual production capacity of 1,000 units, supporting rapid deployment of autonomous mining vehicles across resource-intensive regions.
Utopilot will establish a regional operating center with coverage across Xinjiang. This center will be responsible for operational support, technology deployment, and coordination of unmanned driving solutions, ensuring stable and scalable commercial operations in complex mining scenarios.
The Zhundong Development Park will provide comprehensive policy support and resource guarantees, creating favorable conditions for infrastructure development, industrial expansion, and long-term ecosystem growth within the park.
Building an autonomous mining industrial ecosystem
Beyond vehicle production and operations, the three parties will jointly attract upstream and downstream investments to strengthen the unmanned driving industrial chain. The collaboration aims to form an industrial cluster centered on the unmanned driving eco-chain, bringing together technology providers, equipment manufacturers, and service operators.
Key focus areas of the collaboration include:
  • Technological research and development for autonomous mining solutions
  • Intelligent equipment manufacturing and system integration
  • Commercial operations and large-scale deployment
  • Ecosystem aggregation across the autonomous mining value chain

By integrating research, manufacturing, operations, and ecosystem development, the project is designed to establish a complete industrial loop. This approach supports the broader adoption of autonomous mining technologies while reinforcing Xinjiang’s role as a strategic hub for intelligent mining and unmanned driving applications in China.
