Quick Takeaways
  • Honda Fuel Cell System Discontinuation highlights a strategic shift toward next-generation hydrogen technologies.
  • The move reflects Honda’s long-term plan to strengthen hydrogen as a core future business.
On January 20, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. confirmed its decision to end production of the current fuel cell system before the close of 2026. The system is presently manufactured at Fuel Cell System Manufacturing, LLC (FCSM), a joint venture formed between Honda and General Motors. This decision defines the next phase of Honda Fuel Cell System Discontinuation and its evolving hydrogen roadmap.
FCSM was set up in January 2017 in Brownstown, Michigan, becoming the automotive industry’s first joint venture dedicated to producing advanced fuel cell systems. The partnership brought together Honda and GM’s strengths across development, manufacturing, and procurement to deliver fuel cell systems meeting demanding quality and performance expectations.
Honda Fuel Cell System Discontinuation and FCSM Review
Following years of collaboration, the two companies assessed the future direction of FCSM. While the joint effort delivered positive technical and operational outcomes, Honda and GM engaged in detailed discussions on the long-term viability of continued production at the facility. These talks ultimately led to a mutual decision to discontinue fuel cell system manufacturing at FCSM.
The review process focused on:
  • Alignment with each company’s long-term technology strategies
  • Evolution of fuel cell system design and production requirements
  • Future investment priorities within hydrogen and electrification

Honda’s Next-Generation Hydrogen Strategy
Looking ahead, Honda plans to apply next-generation fuel cell system technologies developed independently. The company aims to accelerate the expansion of its hydrogen business, positioning it as one of Honda’s future core growth areas. This approach underlines Honda’s intent to advance fuel cell innovation beyond the current production model.
Honda has pursued hydrogen and fuel cell research and development for more than three decades. Building on this experience, the company continues to refine fuel cell system efficiency, durability, and scalability as part of its broader carbon-neutral vision and long-term mobility strategy.
