  • Mitsubishi Motors Mexico vehicle production is being assessed as part of a long-term strategy to address rising global tariffs and market competitiveness.
  • The review reflects Mitsubishi’s focus on cost efficiency, supply resilience, and strengthening its position in Mexico’s SUV-driven market.
On January 15, it was reported that Mitsubishi Motors México is assessing the potential for local vehicle manufacturing in Mexico as part of its medium- to long-term strategic planning, against the backdrop of rising global tariffs that are reshaping automotive trade dynamics.
The company clarified that it is not currently impacted by Mexico’s 50% import tariff on vehicles originating from China, Thailand, and Indonesia. This is due to import quotas available through its alliance with Renault and Nissan, which continue to support its present supply structure.
However, Mitsubishi indicated that it aims to gradually lower its dependence on this quota-based arrangement. From a strategic perspective, local manufacturing is being evaluated as a way to mitigate future risks linked to trade policies and shifting regulatory conditions.
Mitsubishi Motors México noted that vehicle production within the country could deliver improved cost competitiveness and stronger market positioning as competition intensifies. While the automaker ruled out any immediate manufacturing rollout, it confirmed that investment in Mexican production remains a consideration for the future.
Any potential localization would be primarily aligned with serving the domestic market, reflecting Mexico’s importance within Mitsubishi’s regional growth roadmap. The company emphasized that decisions will be guided by long-term market demand, cost structures, and operational feasibility.
The automaker also pointed to the solid performance of its SUV portfolio in Mexico, underscoring the country’s strategic role in its broader regional expansion plans and reinforcing the rationale for evaluating local production over the longer term.
