India Two-Wheeler Retail Sales Reach Record August
India Two-Wheeler Retail Sales climbed 19.69 percent year over year to 17,14,610 units in August 2026, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). The result marked the segment’s best-ever August performance, although retail volumes declined 5.70 percent from July, when dealers sold 18,18,289 units. August 2025 volumes were 14,32,537 units. FADA attributed the strong annual growth to continued rural demand and affordability following the GST 2.0 changes, while seasonal factors limited sequential momentum during the month.
FADA said August established a new peak for two-wheeler retail as demand remained resilient despite the seasonal conditions typically associated with the monsoon period. Dealers cited rainfall in some regions and the inauspicious Shravan/Aadi period as factors contributing to the monthly decline. The sequential reduction therefore came alongside a substantial year-over-year increase, indicating that underlying demand remained stronger than the comparable period last year. Rural markets continued to play an important role, supported by affordability and improving purchasing conditions following the GST 2.0 changes.
Rural Markets Continue To Lead Growth
Rural markets retained a slightly larger share of two-wheeler retail than urban markets in August. Rural registrations increased 20.25 percent year over year, exceeding the 19.07 percent growth recorded in urban markets. On a month-over-month basis, however, rural retail declined 6.85 percent, compared with a 4.38 percent reduction in urban retail. The figures show that rural demand remained a significant contributor to annual growth even as seasonal monsoon conditions and other dealer-cited factors caused both market segments to contract sequentially.
Two-Wheeler EV Penetration Crosses 10 Percent
Electric two-wheelers accounted for 10.68 percent of total two-wheeler retail in August, up from 7.66 percent in August 2025. EV penetration was higher in July at 11.24 percent, meaning the share moderated sequentially even as it remained above the 10 percent threshold. Petrol and ethanol vehicles continued to dominate the market with an 89.23 percent share, while CNG and LPG vehicles accounted for 0.08 percent. FADA said August was the first non-festive month in which electric two-wheelers exceeded 10 percent penetration.
The August data also showed that electric two-wheelers increased their share of overall retail despite the segment’s sequential decline. This indicates that the reduction in total two-wheeler volumes did not prevent EVs from maintaining a stronger position than in the same month a year earlier. FADA expects the continued shift toward alternative powertrains to support two-wheeler demand, with the festive season potentially providing additional momentum. The market mix nevertheless remains heavily weighted toward petrol and ethanol-powered vehicles.
Honda Leads August Two-Wheeler Retail
Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India remained the largest two-wheeler OEM in August, recording 4,47,342 units and a 26.09 percent market share. Hero MotoCorp ranked second with 4,13,996 units and a 24.15 percent share, while TVS Motor Company followed with 3,53,746 units and a 20.63 percent share. Bajaj Auto retailed 1,57,149 units for a 9.17 percent share, while Suzuki Motorcycle India recorded 1,04,217 units and a 6.08 percent share.
August Two-Wheeler OEM Retail Volumes
The leading manufacturers collectively represented a substantial portion of August two-wheeler retail, with Honda, Hero MotoCorp and TVS Motor Company occupying the top three positions. Royal Enfield recorded 94,448 units and a 5.51 percent share. Among electric-focused manufacturers separately listed by FADA, Ather Energy recorded 28,757 units for a 1.68 percent share, while Ola Electric recorded 13,852 units and a 0.81 percent share. Greaves Electric Mobility, River Mobility and BGauss recorded 8,613, 5,141 and 4,845 units, respectively.

September Two-Wheeler Retail Outlook
FADA expects two-wheeler demand to receive support from the upcoming festive season and the continued shift toward alternative powertrains. At the same time, the association identified rural cash flows and late-season rainfall as factors that could influence September demand. Dealer sentiment remained cautiously optimistic: 67.09 percent of surveyed dealers expected growth, 27.35 percent anticipated a flat market and 5.56 percent expected de-growth. These expectations indicate that dealers see further potential for expansion while remaining attentive to seasonal and rural-market conditions.
For the September-November period, dealer expectations were more positive than the single-month outlook. FADA reported that 81.62 percent of surveyed dealers expected growth during the period, while 17.09 percent expected the market to remain flat and 1.28 percent anticipated de-growth. The outlook reflects expectations that festive-season demand could strengthen retail volumes after the August monsoon-related slowdown. However, the balance of expectations also leaves rural cash flows and rainfall as important variables that could affect the pace of market recovery and the timing of purchases.
Industry Impact & Outlook
August’s record performance strengthens the near-term outlook for the Indian two-wheeler market while highlighting the growing importance of rural demand, affordability and alternative powertrains. The crossing of 10 percent EV penetration in a non-festive month is particularly relevant for manufacturers as the market gradually broadens beyond conventional petrol and ethanol models. For India’s two-wheeler industry, the next key test will be whether festive-season demand can offset seasonal volatility and sustain higher retail volumes. Competitive positioning among leading OEMs and the ability of electric-focused manufacturers to build on their increased penetration will remain important areas to watch.
