Xiaomi Sky Nomad Series Expands SUV Strategy With Aggressive Pricing

Xiaomi Sky Nomad Series has entered the automotive market with two new range-extended sport utility vehicles, marking the company's first move into this vehicle category. Xiaomi shares declined in Hong Kong after the announcement as investors assessed pricing pressure and delivery targets. The company introduced the new products during a technology launch event and opened pre-sales for the N90 Max and N70 Max models, aiming to strengthen its position in China's rapidly evolving electric vehicle landscape.

The flagship seven-seat N90 Max is priced at 299,900 yuan during pre-sales, while the five-seat N70 Max starts at 259,900 yuan. These prices position the vehicles below several premium competitors in China, including Tesla Model Y L and offerings from Li Auto. Analysts from Deutsche Bank described the pricing approach as aggressive, suggesting that Xiaomi is focusing on higher sales volumes while attempting to accelerate its automotive growth strategy.

A Deutsche Bank research team led by analyst Wang Bin highlighted that Xiaomi is targeting 550,000 vehicle deliveries in 2026. However, the company delivered 185,055 units during the first half of the year, requiring significantly higher monthly volumes in the remaining months. The analysts noted that recent order numbers remained moderate, with weekly new orders in July reported at 5,400, 5,600, 7,400 and 5,700 units based on Thinkercar data.

Xiaomi EV Monthly Deliveries Between 2024 And 2026

Month 2024 2025 2026
January - 22,897 39,002
February - 23,728 20,414
March - 29,244 21,440
April 7,058 28,585 36,702
May 8,630 28,013 32,759
June 14,296 25,459 34,738

The new SUV lineup targets the 200,000 to 300,000 yuan segment, competing against multiple Chinese and global automotive brands. The pricing strategy could increase pressure on manufacturers including BYD, Leapmotor, Xpeng, Geely Auto, Lynk & Co, Chery and Volkswagen. At the same time, premium range-extended models from companies such as Li Auto and other higher-positioned brands may also face stronger competition as Xiaomi expands its vehicle portfolio.

Xiaomi is reportedly adopting lower-cost battery solutions from Sunwoda and CALB for these vehicles instead of the CATL and BYD battery cells used in its fully electric models. According to analysts, this battery sourcing strategy may help support competitive pricing. The new vehicles are based on the Kunlun architecture and represent the company's second major automotive product expansion after its earlier SU7 and YU7 electric vehicle programs.

The N90 Max features a 76 kWh battery pack, providing 464 km of CLTC pure-electric range and a combined range of 1,705 km. The N70 Max offers up to 505 km of pure-electric range. Both models are scheduled for official launch in September, followed by additional Pro and standard variants. Xiaomi founder, chairman and CEO Lei Jun stated that the company sees continued opportunity in the range-extended vehicle market despite recent segment challenges.

According to the China Passenger Car Association, retail sales of range-extended vehicles in China reached 450,000 units during the first half of the year, representing a 15.09% year-on-year decline. Despite this slowdown, Xiaomi believes the segment still has significant growth potential. The company's entry reflects broader competition in China's automotive market, where manufacturers are balancing affordability, technology innovation and customer demand for efficient electrified mobility solutions.
