- Tractor retail sales rose 0.84% year over year.
- August tractor retail fell 25.03% month over month.
- Mahindra & Mahindra led with 23.53% share.
Tractor retail sales in India were largely flat in August 2026, rising 0.84 percent year over year to 87,977 units, according to FADA. The segment recorded 87,244 units in August 2025. On a month-over-month basis, the market contracted sharply by 25.03 percent from 1,17,349 units in July. FADA identified tractors as the clearest indicator of monsoon-linked rural stress during August, as the all-India rainfall deficit widened to around 13 percent and 14 states remained short of rain. The data highlights a significant gap between annual stability and the sharp sequential decline recorded during the month.
August Tractor Retail Declines 25.03 Percent Month Over Month
August tractor retail totaled 87,977 units, compared with 1,17,349 units in July, resulting in a 25.03 percent sequential decline. This was the largest month-on-month contraction among the major vehicle categories covered in FADA's August release. The decline also set tractors apart from several other rural-oriented vehicle segments, which continued to record year-over-year growth. Rural two-wheelers, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and three-wheelers all expanded annually in August, while tractor retail increased by less than one percent, pointing to weaker momentum in the segment despite broader rural vehicle demand remaining positive.
Rural Tractor Retail Grows While Urban Registrations Decline
The rural market provided the main support for tractor registrations in August, increasing 3.09 percent year over year, while urban registrations declined 8.32 percent. Sequentially, however, both markets weakened substantially, with rural tractor retail falling 24.43 percent and urban retail dropping 27.64 percent. FADA linked tractor performance closely with monsoon conditions, making the segment an important indicator of rural stress. The widening rainfall deficit and shortages across 14 states created a challenging backdrop for agricultural demand, even as the rural market maintained annual growth in tractor registrations during the month.
Mahindra & Mahindra Maintains Leading Tractor Market Share
Mahindra & Mahindra recorded 20,703 tractor retail units in August and held a 23.53 percent market share. Its August 2025 volume stood at 20,159 units, when it held a 23.11 percent share. The company's performance therefore showed both annual volume growth and a modest increase in market share. The figures reinforce Mahindra & Mahindra's leading position in the August retail market, although the overall segment experienced a pronounced sequential contraction compared with July.
Other Major Tractor Manufacturers
Mahindra & Mahindra's Swaraj division ranked second with 15,914 units and an 18.09 percent market share. International Tractors Limited followed with 11,818 units and a 13.43 percent share, while TAFE recorded 10,780 units and a 12.25 percent share. Escorts Kubota's agri machinery business registered 9,756 units, giving it an 11.09 percent share. John Deere India recorded 6,294 units and a 7.15 percent share, while Eicher Tractors posted 5,590 units and a 6.35 percent share.
Festive Demand Could Support Tractor Retail in Coming Months
FADA's broader retail outlook points to festive demand as a potential support for vehicle sales from September through November, although rural conditions remain an important variable for tractors. For September, 67.09 percent of surveyed dealers expected market growth, while 27.35 percent anticipated a flat market and 5.56 percent expected de-growth. Looking across September-November, 81.62 percent of dealers expected growth. FADA said the impact of a below-normal monsoon on rural demand was the second-largest risk identified by dealers, behind weaker-than-expected festive demand.
August Tractor Data Excludes Telangana Registrations
The August tractor data excludes Telangana because FADA did not have access to the state's tractor registration figures for the month. This limitation is relevant when comparing the reported national total with earlier periods or interpreting the market's full geographic performance. FADA said its overall retail dataset was compiled in collaboration with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and covered 1,467 of 1,469 Regional Transport Offices. The missing Telangana data therefore represents a specific coverage limitation in the August tractor registration figures rather than a change to the reported results for the other included markets.
Industry Impact & Outlook
The August tractor results indicate that rural vehicle demand remains sensitive to agricultural and monsoon conditions, with tractors showing much weaker annual momentum than several other rural-oriented segments and a particularly steep sequential decline. The combination of a roughly 13 percent nationwide rainfall deficit and shortages across 14 states could remain an important consideration for manufacturers and dealers as they approach the festive period. At the same time, strong dealer expectations for September-November growth suggest that festive demand could provide support if rural conditions stabilize. Manufacturers with significant tractor exposure will therefore remain closely tied to regional rainfall patterns and rural purchasing conditions.
