Three-Wheeler Retail Reaches Record August
Three-wheeler retail sales climbed 8.64 percent year over year to 1,22,281 units in August 2026, giving the segment its strongest August on record, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). August volumes were nevertheless 8.59 percent lower than July's 1,33,778 units, while the segment had recorded 1,12,553 units in August 2025. The result highlights continued annual growth despite a sequential slowdown, with overall performance shaped by a sharp improvement in rural demand and contrasting trends across passenger, goods, personal-use, and electric rickshaw categories.
Rural Markets Drive Annual Growth
Rural markets were the main growth engine for three-wheelers in August, with retail volumes rising 23.95 percent from a year earlier. Urban markets moved in the opposite direction, declining 6.95 percent year over year. Both channels recorded month-over-month declines, however, as rural retail fell 8.20 percent from July and urban retail dropped 9.12 percent. The divergence indicates that the segment's annual expansion was concentrated in rural demand, while urban sales faced a softer sequential environment during the month.
Passenger And Goods Three-Wheeler Retail
FADA's August data covered passenger, goods, and personal-use three-wheelers along with electric rickshaws for passengers and carts. Passenger three-wheelers accounted for 72,657 units, up 23.11 percent from 59,017 units in August 2025. Goods three-wheelers reached 14,614 units, increasing 42.76 percent year over year. Personal three-wheelers remained a small category at 165 units, but volumes still rose 28.91 percent from the prior year, showing broad annual gains across the conventional passenger and goods categories.
Electric Rickshaw Categories Decline
Electric rickshaw categories showed weaker annual performance than conventional passenger and goods three-wheelers. Passenger electric rickshaws totaled 28,816 units in August, down 22.03 percent from 36,957 units a year earlier. Electric rickshaws equipped with carts reached 6,029 units, a 2.98 percent decline from 6,214 units in August 2025. These results created a clear split within the electric portion of the segment, even as the overall three-wheeler market maintained a high level of electric penetration.
EVs Hold More Than 65 Percent Share
Electric vehicles accounted for 65.30 percent of three-wheeler retail in August, compared with 65.07 percent in July and 56.63 percent in August 2025. CNG and LPG vehicles represented 21.50 percent of retail, while diesel vehicles held 12.89 percent. Petrol and ethanol models accounted for 0.31 percent. FADA characterized the segment as structurally electric, with EV penetration remaining above 65 percent. The year-over-year increase in electric share underscores the continued importance of electrification within three-wheeler retail.
OEM Market Share Performance
Bajaj Auto remained the leading three-wheeler OEM in August, retailing 42,605 units for a 34.84 percent market share. Its share was lower than the 38.87 percent recorded in August 2025, when it retailed 43,744 units. Mahindra & Mahindra recorded 13,381 units and a 10.94 percent share, while Mahindra Last Mile Mobility registered 13,367 units and a 10.93 percent share. Piaggio Vehicles followed with 8,426 units and a 6.89 percent share, and TVS Motor Company recorded 7,139 units with a 5.84 percent share.
September Three-Wheeler Outlook
FADA expects three-wheeler demand to receive support from the broader festive period in September, although it cautioned that rural demand remains exposed to rainfall conditions. Across the overall auto retail market, 67.09 percent of surveyed dealers expected growth in September, while 27.35 percent anticipated flat conditions and 5.56 percent expected de-growth. The three-wheeler outlook therefore combines potential festive-season support with a weather-related risk to rural demand, which was the strongest source of annual segment growth in August.
FADA Data Coverage And Registration Limits
The August three-wheeler figures do not include Telangana because registrations for the category from the state were unavailable when the data was compiled. FADA said the retail figures were collated as of September 4 from 1,467 of 1,469 RTOs. The coverage limitation should be considered when interpreting the reported national segment performance, particularly because the published totals reflect the registration data available to FADA at the time of compilation rather than a fully complete dataset from every RTO.
Industry Impact & Outlook
The August results reinforce the three-wheeler segment's strong structural shift toward electric vehicles while showing that growth is increasingly dependent on rural demand and its operating conditions. Rising passenger and goods volumes support a positive annual market trajectory, but the decline in urban retail and weaker electric-rickshaw categories indicate that performance remains uneven across use cases. The leading OEMs continue to compete for a sizable share of the market, while September's festive period could provide additional demand support. Rainfall conditions and the incomplete Telangana registration data remain important factors when assessing the near-term trajectory.
