Tesla Giga Shanghai Reaches Six Million Battery Packs
Tesla Giga Shanghai 6 millionth battery pack milestone highlights the scale of the company’s battery operations at its largest global production base. Tesla announced the achievement on Weibo on Tuesday, saying it maintains in-house research and development and independent design from cell chemistry through battery-pack structure. The company added that its battery packs undergo multiple rounds of stringent testing and are designed to deliver strong performance, long lifespans and high safety standards. The latest milestone follows the 5 millionth battery pack produced in November 2025, meaning Giga Shanghai manufactured the latest one million packs in about nine months.
Battery Cell Supply And Shanghai Production Base
Despite its battery-pack production capabilities, Tesla does not manufacture battery cells itself in China. Giga Shanghai mainly sources cells from Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd, commonly known as CATL, and South Korea’s LG Energy Solution. The factory is located in Shanghai’s Lingang New Area and is Tesla’s first vehicle plant outside the United States, as well as China’s first wholly foreign-owned vehicle manufacturing project. Construction began in January 2019, production started by the end of that year, and deliveries of the Model 3 sedan began in January 2020, followed by the Model Y SUV in January 2021.
Giga Shanghai Production Milestones
Giga Shanghai currently has annual production capacity of about 1 million vehicles, making it Tesla, Inc.’s largest and most highly utilized manufacturing base globally. In more than six years of operation, the facility has contributed nearly half of Tesla’s global electric vehicle deliveries. Its production milestones extend beyond battery packs: in August 2024, Tesla’s 10 millionth electric drive system globally rolled off the line there, while the 4 millionth China-made Tesla vehicle was produced at the factory in December 2025. At the end of July this year, Tesla also announced that it had produced its 10 millionth electric vehicle globally.
China Sales Decline Contrasts With Manufacturing Stability
The manufacturing milestone comes against a weaker sales backdrop in China, creating a contrast between production stability and local demand. Tesla delivered 27,249 vehicles in China in July, down 32.91% year on year and marking the second consecutive month of year-on-year declines. At the same time, exports are helping support capacity utilization at Giga Shanghai. The factory exported 66,330 vehicles in July, a record monthly high that represented 70.88% of its wholesale sales for the month.
Exports Support Shanghai Factory Utilization
Export momentum has become increasingly important to the Shanghai operation. During the first seven months of this year, the factory exported 295,324 vehicles, an increase of 130.12% year on year and already above the 226,034 units exported during all of 2025. By comparison, Tesla deliveries in China over the same seven-month period fell 12.44% year on year to 266,204 vehicles. These figures indicate that the factory is increasingly serving overseas markets even as domestic demand remains under pressure. The combination allows Tesla to maintain high utilization while it works to strengthen its position in the Chinese market.
New Model Y Variant Targets Local Demand
Tesla is also expanding its product lineup in an effort to improve local demand. Information released last week by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology showed that a new Model Y variant has a range of 659 kilometers and is expected to be a performance version. The move adds a product-development element to Tesla’s response as its Shanghai factory reaches another major production milestone. While the battery-pack achievement demonstrates sustained manufacturing scale, the company’s sales and export figures show that maintaining utilization increasingly depends on balancing domestic demand with international shipments from its strategically important Shanghai facility.
Frequently Asked Questions
What milestone did Tesla’s Giga Shanghai achieve?
Tesla’s Giga Shanghai produced its 6 millionth battery pack, reinforcing the facility’s importance to the company’s global manufacturing network. The milestone was announced on Weibo and follows production of the 5 millionth battery pack in November 2025. Tesla said the packs undergo multiple rounds of stringent testing and are designed for strong performance, long service life and high safety standards. The latest one million packs were produced in approximately nine months, demonstrating the continued scale and pace of battery-pack production at the Shanghai facility.
