SUN Mobility Unveils Modular Multi-Battery Swappable Solution for Commercial Vehicles

SUN Mobility introduced its first Modular Multi-Battery Swappable Solution for commercial vehicles operating under its Heavy Electric Vehicles (HEV) business during Prawaas 5.0 on July 9. The technology was demonstrated on the Tata Motors Starbus 12m EV platform and has been developed to overcome major obstacles slowing commercial fleet electrification. These include high initial vehicle acquisition costs, charging downtime, operational inefficiencies, and challenges associated with scaling electric vehicle deployments across different fleet applications.

Modular battery architecture supports multiple vehicle segments

The solution is built around an AIS-038 certified modular battery architecture capable of swapping two battery packs simultaneously. The complete swapping process takes less than five minutes, helping commercial fleets minimize idle time and improve vehicle utilization. The platform supports both 50 kWh and 100 kWh battery configurations, making it suitable for vehicles ranging from approximately 3 tonnes to 55 tonnes gross vehicle weight. This flexible design enables operators to adopt battery capacities that best match their operational requirements.

Battery-as-a-Service model targets fleet efficiency

SUN Mobility is delivering the solution through its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) business model, allowing fleet operators to access battery services without bearing the full ownership cost of battery packs. According to the company, the complete system has been engineered internally in India and is supported by a portfolio of more than 275 patents. The launch also aligns with the company's long-term strategy of expanding its battery swapping ecosystem, which currently includes more than 1,900 swap points and has facilitated tens of millions of battery swaps.
