- Mitsubishi unveils the all-new Pajero flagship SUV.
- New S-AWC system strengthens off-road flagship capability.
On September 2, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation unveiled the all-new Pajero midsize cross-country SUV at its world premiere, positioning the redesigned model as a new-generation flagship for the brand. First introduced in 1982 as a cross-country 4WD, the Pajero has built a substantial global legacy across four generations, with cumulative production exceeding 3.29 million units. The model has developed a loyal following across more than 170 countries and regions, establishing the Pajero name as one of Mitsubishi Motors’ most recognized and enduring vehicle lines.
Flagship Positioning Builds on Pajero Heritage
The redesigned Pajero continues the product philosophy established by earlier generations by combining Confidence and Comfort while adding Prestige as a defining new dimension. Confidence reflects the model’s established off-road capability and reliability, while Comfort addresses passenger comfort and ease of handling. Prestige represents the premium quality expected from a flagship vehicle. Mitsubishi Motors says these three qualities together drive a broad evolution of the SUV, retaining the characteristics that have defined the Pajero while raising its positioning for a new generation.
Grand Charisma Defines the New Design
Under the design concept of “Grand Charisma,” the exterior adopts bold proportions, strong horizontal lines, and a commanding stance intended to emphasize the SUV’s flagship role. The interior combines functionality, advanced features, and finely crafted detailing. Signature design motifs associated with previous Pajero generations are incorporated both inside and outside, connecting the new model with its heritage while giving it a distinctly contemporary identity. The resulting design is intended to reinforce the Pajero’s role as a premium flagship without losing its established cross-country character.
SS4-II and S-AWC Enhance All-Around Capability
The all-new Pajero builds on the Super Select 4WD-II (SS4-II) system, which Mitsubishi Motors has refined through use in demanding environments, and adds Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) to deliver high levels of all-around capability. Power comes from a specially developed 2.4-liter clean diesel engine equipped with a wide-range single variable geometry turbocharger (VGT). The engine is paired with a newly developed 8-speed automatic transmission with sport mode, designed to provide smooth and seamless gear changes across different driving conditions.
Rigid Ladder Frame Supports Stability and Durability
The SUV is designed to provide easy and comfortable driving from urban roads to outdoor adventures. It measures 4,920 mm in length, 1,925 mm in width, and 1,910 mm in height, with front and rear tracks of 1,630 mm and a 2,870 mm wheelbase. A highly rigid ladder frame forms the vehicle’s structural foundation. Expanded use of high-tensile steel helps reduce weight, while a larger frame cross-sectional area increases torsional and bending rigidity. These measures support handling stability, ride comfort, durability, and reliability while maintaining the structural characteristics required for cross-country driving.
Thailand Production Supports Global Expansion
The suspension uses an independent double-wishbone arrangement at the front and a newly developed five-link rigid axle at the rear. Production of the new flagship SUV will take place at Mitsubishi Motors’ manufacturing base in Thailand. The company plans to launch the vehicle first in Thailand, followed by Japan and Australia during fiscal 2026. From fiscal 2027 onward, Mitsubishi Motors plans to introduce the model in approximately 100 countries worldwide, including markets across ASEAN, Latin America, and the Middle East. This rollout positions the redesigned Pajero for a broad international return.
