Maruti Suzuki Maintains Focus on Affordable Small Cars

Maruti Suzuki Small Car Strategy continues to focus on expanding vehicle ownership through affordable passenger cars despite the industry's increasing preference for sport utility vehicles. The company believes entry-level cars remain essential for wider mobility adoption in India, where ownership levels are still developing. Maruti Suzuki said affordable vehicles can help more customers enter the personal mobility segment while balancing pricing, features, and ownership costs.

The country's largest carmaker believes improving demand and low vehicle penetration create a long-term opportunity for compact cars. "If motorization has to happen in India, everybody cannot leapfrog straight to a Rs 15 lakh or Rs 20 lakh car," Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer for sales and marketing at Maruti Suzuki India. India currently has about 34 cars for every 1,000 people, indicating significant potential for future growth in personal transportation.

Safety Regulations Increase Cost Pressure on Entry-Level Vehicles

The entry-level vehicle segment has experienced challenges as stricter safety and regulatory requirements increased manufacturing costs. Banerjee explained that additional equipment costs have a greater percentage impact on affordable cars compared with premium vehicles. "If you add safety features like airbags to a car costing Rs 5 lakh, the cost percentage impact is vastly higher than on a car priced at Rs 25 lakh," he said. Buyers in this segment continue to prioritise fuel efficiency, affordability, and lower ownership expenses when selecting vehicles.

Maruti Suzuki holds more than 80% of India's hatchback market and expects demand recovery after a prolonged slowdown. The company said customer interest has started improving from a low base as buyers continue looking for practical transportation solutions. Banerjee said the company's approach remains focused on delivering the right product at the right price while avoiding unnecessary features that could increase costs for first-time buyers.

Small Hatchbacks Remain Important for Market Expansion

Small hatchbacks continue to represent an important part of domestic passenger vehicle demand, accounting for around 28% of sales. These vehicles remain suitable for urban environments because of their compact dimensions, lower emissions, and efficient operation. The company believes competitively priced new cars will continue attracting first-time buyers despite the availability of used vehicles. Affordable models provide customers with accessibility to personal mobility while supporting broader automotive market development.

The company said its mobility philosophy remains centred on serving customers across different income segments. "Our fundamental philosophy remains unchanged: to provide the joy of mobility across segments," Banerjee said. "If you provide the customer with the right product at the right price, there remains a massive market waiting to be tapped." The approach reflects continued confidence in affordable vehicles as an important driver of long-term passenger car adoption.
