Maruti Suzuki Sees Strong Revival in Small Car Demand

Maruti Suzuki has reported a significant improvement in first-time buyer participation, indicating a recovery trend in India's entry-level passenger vehicle segment. First-time buyers contributed 54% of the company's sales during the first quarter, increasing from 51% in the previous quarter. The improvement has coincided with a sharp increase in small-car volumes following the recent reduction in goods and services tax GST rates. Rahul Bharti, senior executive officer for corporate affairs at Maruti Suzuki, said the rise in first-time buyers was supported by stronger small-car demand during the quarter.

The automaker recorded a 34% year-on-year increase in small-car sales during the quarter, reflecting renewed customer interest after several years of subdued demand. Maruti Suzuki stated that its portfolio under the 18% GST category, which mainly includes smaller vehicles, also grew by around 34% year on year. The company's portfolio in the 40% GST category expanded by nearly 30%, showing broad-based improvement across different vehicle segments. The recovery comes after a prolonged slowdown caused by rising ownership costs and changing regulatory requirements.

Entry-Level Segment Recovery Driven by Affordability

The small-car segment has faced challenges in recent years as stricter safety standards and regulatory requirements increased vehicle prices. These additional costs created a larger impact on affordable cars compared with premium vehicles because buyers in the entry-level category remain highly sensitive to pricing. Customers continue to prioritise fuel efficiency, maintenance expenses and overall ownership costs while making purchase decisions. India's affordable passenger vehicle market is now showing signs of recovery as improved affordability encourages more first-time customers to return.

Maruti Suzuki, which holds a dominant position in India's hatchback segment, expects the improvement in small-car demand to continue. According to company officials, the recent GST reduction has helped improve vehicle affordability and supported customer confidence. Rahul Bharti stated that the company sold approximately 359,000 vehicles in the 18% GST category compared with industry sales of around 734,000 units. In the 40% GST category, Maruti Suzuki sold about 161,000 vehicles while the industry recorded around 470,000 units.

Strong Demand Across Urban and Rural Markets

Management indicated that demand remained healthy across both urban and rural markets during the quarter. Dealer inventory levels stood at around 13 days, significantly below the company's preferred inventory level of approximately one month. Pending customer orders reached nearly 130,000 units at the end of the quarter, highlighting sustained customer interest. The company said demand conditions remain positive despite ongoing supply limitations, with production capacity rather than market demand becoming the primary factor restricting additional growth.

Maruti Suzuki has started expanding manufacturing capacity to support future growth and address rising customer demand. The company commissioned a new production line at Kharkhoda during the first quarter and began operations at a fourth manufacturing line at its Hansalpur facility in Gujarat in July. Together, these facilities contribute around 500,000 vehicles of additional annual installed capacity. Management noted that capacity utilisation will increase gradually as production operations stabilise across the expanded manufacturing network.

Manufacturing Expansion Supports Future Growth Outlook

The company believes multiple business areas are showing positive momentum, including small-car recovery, SUV growth, exports and manufacturing expansion. Rahul Bharti highlighted that demand conditions have strengthened significantly compared with previous years, while the company continues working to increase supply capabilities. The return of first-time buyers represents an important development for the entry-level passenger vehicle market because this customer group has traditionally been a major contributor to small-car sales. The recent improvement suggests renewed confidence among value-focused vehicle buyers.
