- Maruti Suzuki eVitara production remains constrained before festivities.
- A smaller EV could broaden Maruti's future lineup.
Ahead of the upcoming festive season, Maruti Suzuki India expects Maruti Suzuki eVitara production to increase as supply constraints ease. The automaker is balancing domestic demand, exports, and production requirements for other models while managing pending bookings for its first electric vehicle. Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing & Sales, Maruti Suzuki India, said the company is currently facing a capacity constraint of about 2,000 vehicles in the near term. “Response is very good. And in fact, we have got pending bookings. But we have got a capacity constraint at about 2,000 vehicles," Banerjee said.
eVitara Production and Backlog at Maruti's Gujarat Plant
The eVitara is produced on a shared production line at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat plant, which has an annual capacity of around 1 lakh units. The company is currently balancing production across different models while also meeting export requirements. Banerjee said production allocations are being varied month-on-month to clear the existing backlog and keep waiting periods under control. This approach allows the automaker to adjust manufacturing volumes according to demand and available capacity. “As soon as that eases up, we are going to further scale it up,” he said, indicating that production could be increased as the current constraints ease.
Smaller EV in the Pipeline
Maruti Suzuki also expects its future electric vehicle portfolio to expand beyond the eVitara, with a smaller EV planned for introduction. Banerjee said the company has plans to launch more electric vehicles and believes a smaller model could support broader EV adoption in India. The company expects vehicle availability and charging infrastructure to develop alongside one another, helping strengthen the wider electric mobility ecosystem. “We have a plan to launch more electric vehicles. We are going to come up with a small EV soon,” he said. The planned addition would give Maruti another product option as demand for electric vehicles develops.
India EV Market Outlook and Maruti's CBG Strategy
Banerjee expects the overall auto industry to reach around 6.1-6.3 million units by 2030, with EVs accounting for around 16-17% of the market. This would leave more than 80% of the market comprising non-EV powertrains, highlighting the continued importance of multiple propulsion technologies. Maruti Suzuki India is also working on compressed biogas, or CBG, as part of its decarbonization strategy for the remaining market. Banerjee said around 44% of Maruti’s current sales come from CNG vehicles, creating a significant potential base for CBG adoption. The strategy therefore extends beyond battery-electric vehicles to address broader powertrain decarbonization.
