L&T targets sovereign connected vehicle data framework for India
L&T connected vehicle data standard initiative focuses on creating a domestic framework for the data generated by connected vehicles in India. Larsen & Toubro believes the country requires a credible Indian alternative that can provide a sovereign standard for connected mobility data. Prashant Chiranjive Jain, who leads the group's Electronic Products and Systems division and L&T Vyoma, said the objective is to establish a trusted ecosystem that cannot be controlled or penetrated by technology players outside India.
The proposal was discussed during a briefing on L&T EPS Mobility, the group's automotive business division. Jain highlighted that the opportunity is linked with vehicle-to-everything communication, or V2X, technologies that enable vehicles to exchange information with other vehicles, roadside infrastructure and cloud platforms. The architecture for connected mobility in India is still developing, especially after regulatory discussions around spectrum allocation and licence-exempt usage of communication bands.
India moves toward V2X communication architecture
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India released a consultation paper on V2X communication on 30 April, proposing 50 megahertz in the 5.875 to 5.925 gigahertz frequency band. The proposal included 30 megahertz for vehicle-to-vehicle communication and 20 megahertz for vehicle-to-infrastructure applications. The Department of Telecommunications later introduced a framework in June for licence-exempt usage of the band, creating a foundation for future connected mobility deployment in India.
L&T's connected mobility strategy is supported by capabilities across multiple business entities. Larsen & Toubro Semiconductor Technologies has developed a controller for brushless direct current motors and a Wi-Fi chip for two-wheelers and three-wheelers. The semiconductor division also joined the imec automotive chiplet programme, acquired SiliconCH, launched a cellular internet-of-things module using Qualcomm silicon and signed an agreement related to silicon carbide power devices.

The electronics division currently supplies telematics solutions based on 4G connectivity and is progressing toward 5G technology. L&T Vyoma operates the group's data centre business with 26 megawatts of operational capacity as of FY26, while L&T Technology Services provides automotive engineering expertise. Jain confirmed that L&T intends to develop an integrated ecosystem covering semiconductors, cybersecurity, connectivity and data centre infrastructure to support future connected vehicle requirements.

Connected vehicle data standard faces competitive landscape
Jain stated that vehicle data currently exists across different formats and applications, creating challenges for standardisation. He also noted similar concerns for connected devices such as electricity meters and solar inverters. However, several technologies supporting the proposed ecosystem are still under development. Telematics remains based on 4G connectivity, while the motor control unit and integrated drive unit are expected during the first quarter of 2027.
Advanced driver assistance systems are also part of L&T's future mobility roadmap. These systems use cameras and sensors to provide driver warnings or intervention capabilities, beginning with basic functions before moving toward higher automation levels within two to three years. Such systems are expected to become mandatory for heavy commercial vehicles from 1 October 2027, increasing demand for connected safety technologies.
Global suppliers compete in India's connected mobility market
The connected vehicle ecosystem in India already includes international suppliers, telecom companies and vehicle manufacturers that operate their own platforms and manage vehicle-generated data. Bosch, which competes with L&T in several technology areas, introduced third-generation silicon carbide chips in India and continues efforts toward greater localisation. L&T is engaging with industry bodies including the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association and the India Electronics and Semiconductor Association during mobility policy development.
The scale of L&T's investment highlights its long-term mobility ambitions. The group's hi-tech manufacturing segment reported revenue of ₹14,489 crore in FY26, while overall group revenue exceeded ₹2.85 lakh crore. The Electronic Products and Systems division has board approval for approximately ₹5,000 crore investment over five years. The mobility business currently has one disclosed customer as it develops its broader connected technology ecosystem for India.
