- India Passenger Vehicle Market July 2026 rises strongly.
- SUV demand continues to dominate July registrations.
India Passenger Vehicle Market Records Strong Annual Growth
India’s passenger vehicle market recorded a 15.4 per cent year-on-year increase in July 2026, with registrations reaching 4.12 lakh units compared with 3.57 lakh units in July 2025. The India Passenger Vehicle Market July 2026 performance was supported by continued consumer preference for SUVs, replacement demand, improved vehicle availability and stable economic conditions, according to JATO Dynamics. Despite the strong annual increase, registrations declined 3.8 per cent month on month from 4.28 lakh units in June 2026. JATO said the sequential decline reflected normalisation in retail activity after higher volumes in the previous month.
SUVs Continue To Dominate Passenger Vehicle Demand
SUVs accounted for more than half of passenger vehicle registrations in July, reinforcing their leading position in the Indian market during 2026. Together with hatchbacks, the two segments represented almost 80 per cent of passenger car registrations during the month. The fuel mix remained broadly unchanged from June, with petrol vehicles accounting for 52 per cent of registrations, followed by CNG at 24 per cent and diesel at 16 per cent. Electric vehicles represented the remaining 8 per cent, indicating that conventional and alternative powertrains continued to coexist within the overall passenger vehicle market in India.
Maruti Suzuki Retains Market Leadership
Maruti Suzuki retained its position as India’s largest passenger vehicle manufacturer by registrations in July, accounting for 39.4 per cent of the market. Its share increased by 0.48 percentage points year on year, while registrations reached 1,62,219 vehicles, according to JATO’s July data. Tata Motors recorded one of the stronger market-share gains, reaching 13.85 per cent after increasing its share by 1.90 percentage points year on year, with 57,014 registrations. Mahindra held a 13.49 per cent share with 55,557 registrations, gaining 0.34 percentage points from the previous year.
Dzire Leads July Model Registrations
At the model level, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire was the most registered passenger vehicle in July, with more than 21,500 units. The Tata Punch followed with more than 20,000 units, while the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga recorded more than 18,500 units. The model rankings underline the continued importance of both high-volume compact vehicles and SUV-oriented products in the Indian passenger vehicle market. JATO said the July market remained centred around SUV-focused manufacturers, while Maruti Suzuki continued to lead and Tata Motors and Mahindra increased their market shares. These results highlight sustained demand across multiple passenger vehicle segments.
JATO Highlights Resilient Market Conditions
JATO Dynamics said the July 2026 results demonstrated healthy double-digit annual growth in India’s passenger vehicle market. Ravi Bhatia, president of JATO Dynamics India, described the monthly performance as evidence of continued market health. The latest figures are based on vehicle registrations available as of August 1, 2026, with Telangana excluded from the dataset. The combination of strong year-on-year growth, sustained SUV demand and improved availability points to resilient underlying demand, although the month-on-month decline suggests that July represented a normalisation from the higher registration level recorded in June.
