India's EV Retail Market Expands Across Major Segments
India EV Retail reached 333,634 units in September 2026, with electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers and passenger vehicles all recording higher volumes than a year earlier. The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) compiled the data on October 3 from 1,468 of 1,469 RTOs. Electric two-wheelers accounted for 207,314 units, followed by electric three-wheelers at 86,024 units, electric passenger vehicles at 36,108 units and electric commercial vehicles at 4,188 units. The results show broad-based year-over-year expansion across all four categories, although monthly performance varied, with commercial vehicles declining from August while the other segments increased.
Electric Two-Wheeler Retail Reaches 207,314 Units
Electric two-wheelers remained the largest EV retail category, reaching 207,314 units in September compared with 183,204 units in August and 109,882 units a year earlier. Retail increased 13.16% month over month and 88.67% year over year, while category penetration climbed to 11.6% from 10.7% in August and 8.2% in September 2025. TVS Motor Company led with 54,037 units, followed by Bajaj Auto at 48,429 units and Ather Energy at 30,533 units. Hero MotoCorp recorded 24,321 units, while Ola Electric reached 13,451 units. Greaves Electric Mobility, River Mobility and Bgauss Auto also recorded notable volumes.
Electric Two-Wheeler Growth Varies by Manufacturer
Growth among electric two-wheeler manufacturers was uneven despite the segment's strong overall expansion. Ola Electric was the only major listed manufacturer in the cited group to post a year-over-year decline, with retail falling 2.96%. In contrast, Bounce Electric increased 242.91% year over year, while E-Sprinto Green Energy rose 108.67%. The broader list also included 3,069 units for Bounce Electric and 1,997 for E-Sprinto, alongside 5,556 for River Mobility and 5,023 for Bgauss Auto. The figures indicate that rising category demand was accompanied by significant differences in retail performance among individual manufacturers.
Electric Three-Wheeler Retail Grows 40.03% Year Over Year
Electric three-wheeler retail increased to 86,024 units in September from 79,846 units in August and 61,434 units in September 2025. The category grew 7.74% month over month and 40.03% year over year, while electric penetration reached 64.9%, compared with 65.3% in August and 56.7% a year earlier. Bajaj Auto was the largest individual manufacturer with 15,109 units, followed by Mahindra Group with 14,716 units and TVS Motor Company with 4,630 units. Mahindra Last Mile Mobility accounted for 14,699 units within the Mahindra Group total. The 'Others' category remained substantial at 38,504 units.
Electric Passenger Vehicle Retail Nearly Doubles
Electric passenger vehicle retail rose to 36,108 units in September, compared with 30,696 units in August and 18,559 units a year earlier. The segment increased 17.63% month over month and 94.56% year over year, while EV penetration reached 8.5%, up from 7.6% in August and 5.7% in September 2025. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles led with 14,791 units, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra at 7,780 units and JSW MG Motor India at 5,242 units. VinFast Auto India recorded 2,964 units, compared with six units a year earlier. Kia India, Maruti Suzuki India, BYD India and Hyundai Motor India also recorded retail during the month.
Premium Brands Add to Electric Passenger Vehicle Sales
Premium and luxury brands also contributed to September's electric passenger vehicle retail, although their volumes remained smaller than those of the leading mass-market manufacturers. BMW India recorded 502 units, Tesla India 291 units, Toyota Kirloskar Motor 218 units and Mercedes-Benz 125 units. Maruti Suzuki India recorded 1,104 units, down 21.81% month over month, while Kia India reached 1,262 units, nearly doubling its August retail. The range of manufacturers represented in the data shows that electric passenger vehicle adoption was spread across mainstream, emerging and premium brands, with substantial differences in monthly and annual performance.
Electric Commercial Vehicle Retail Declines Monthly
Electric commercial vehicle retail was the only major EV category to decline month over month, falling 10.93% to 4,188 units from 4,702 units in August. Despite that decline, the segment increased 158.2% year over year from 1,622 units, while electric penetration reached 4.04%, compared with 5.18% in August and 2.16% a year earlier. Tata Motors led with 1,275 units, followed by Euler Motors at 1,064 units. Mahindra Group recorded 464 units, JBM Auto 271 units and Switch Mobility 261 units. Euler's retail was up 1,644.26% year over year, highlighting the sharp growth rates recorded by some manufacturers from relatively lower prior-year volumes.
FADA Notes Data Limitation for Tamil Nadu
FADA's September dataset also shows considerable variation among the remaining electric commercial vehicle manufacturers. VE Commercial Vehicles recorded 149 units, while Tivolt Electric Vehicles and PMI Electro Mobility Solutions registered 142 and 141 units, respectively. Oletra Greentech's retail fell 59.05% month over month and 12.84% year over year to 129 units. Sany Heavy Industry India recorded 38 units, compared with 605 units in August and two units a year earlier. FADA also noted that India data from Tamil Nadu was unavailable for the commercial vehicle and three-wheeler categories in the September dataset, an important limitation when interpreting the reported category totals and comparisons.
Industry Impact & Outlook
The September results indicate that electric vehicle adoption in India continued to broaden across two-wheelers, three-wheelers and passenger vehicles, while commercial vehicles also delivered substantial year-over-year growth despite their monthly decline. The combination of rising penetration and higher retail volumes across the major categories points to an expanding market opportunity for manufacturers, dealers and EV-focused businesses. Competitive performance remains uneven, however, with individual manufacturers posting sharply different growth rates. Continued category-level growth, manufacturer competition and more complete regional reporting will remain important factors in assessing the direction of India's EV retail market in subsequent months.
