Catena-X Creates Cross-Border Automotive Data Ecosystem Between Europe and China
On July 22, Catena-X Automotive Network eV launched the Catena-X Automotive Data Ecosystem, creating the world’s first trusted cross-border automotive data ecosystem connecting Europe and China. The initiative has been developed in partnership with the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) and VDA China to support secure automotive data exchange between both regions. The ecosystem is designed to improve supply chain transparency and enable standardized data sharing across international automotive networks.
The new ecosystem will operate from China through Zhonglian, which becomes Catena-X’s second operating partner and the first partner established outside Europe. Zhonglian will manage operations within China while supporting implementation, technical licensing, and ecosystem expansion. The partnership strengthens cooperation between European and Chinese automotive industries by creating a trusted framework where manufacturers, suppliers, and technology providers can exchange verified supply chain information.
Battery Passport Integration Across European and Chinese Regulations
The Catena-X Automotive Data Ecosystem enables battery passports to be generated once using real supply chain data and accepted across both European regulations and Chinese requirements. This approach reduces duplication of data collection processes while improving traceability throughout the battery value chain. The system supports future regulatory compliance by allowing automotive companies to maintain consistent and trusted battery information across different markets.
Operations for the China-based ecosystem are expected to begin in mid-November 2026. Zhonglian will be formally established as the operating partner in China, while Zhonglian and Cofinity-X, Catena-X’s first operating partner, will provide technical licensing and support. The collaboration represents a significant step toward international automotive data interoperability and stronger digital supply chain connections between Europe and China.
