BYD Racco Enters Japan's Electric K-Car Market
BYD Racco has entered Japan's compact electric vehicle segment, targeting the country's highly competitive K-Car market. The all-electric model starts at 2.145 million yen ($13,100) and becomes available below 2 million yen after government subsidies. The launch marks BYD's move into Japan's most important vehicle category, where compact vehicles account for nearly 40% of new vehicle sales. The model directly competes with established Japanese automakers including Toyota, Honda, and Nissan in their domestic market.
The entry-level BYD Racco version delivers a WLTC driving range of 210 kilometers, while higher-spec variants offer significantly improved capability. The 300 Plus and 300 Premium versions use a 35.84-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, providing a range of 320 kilometers. BYD stated that the model becomes the first kei EV in Japan to exceed the 300-kilometer range milestone, strengthening its position in a segment where affordability, efficiency, and practicality are key purchase factors.
BYD Racco Specifications And Market Position
BYD Racco is available in three versions in Japan: the entry-level 200, 300 Plus, and 300 Premium. The higher versions start at 2.398 million yen and 2.497 million yen respectively. The vehicle measures 3,395 millimeters in length and 1,475 millimeters in width, meeting Japan's K-Car size regulations. Its 1,800-millimeter height follows the super-high roof design preferred by Japanese customers. The vehicle also introduces features such as power sliding doors with kick sensors, making it the first kei EV in Japan to offer this convenience feature.
The electric motor produces a maximum output of 47 kW (63 hp, 64 Ps) and peak torque of 160 Nm. DC fast charging is limited to 50 kW, similar to the Honda N-ONE e:, despite the larger battery capacity of the BYD model. The Racco includes a 10.1-inch center display, Level 2 driver assistance technology, vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, heated seats and steering wheel, NFC phone key support, and battery preconditioning features designed for everyday urban mobility.
Competition In Japan's Kei EV Segment
Japan's K-Car segment is highly important due to its suitability for narrow streets, urban environments, and rural roads. The segment represents nearly 40% of new vehicle sales in Japan. Toyota's Suzuki and Daihatsu operations, along with Honda, control approximately 80% of the minicar market. BYD Racco aims to challenge this established domestic competition through competitive pricing, longer driving range, and additional technology features.
Nissan's Sakura remains Japan's best-selling electric vehicle and starts at approximately 2.44 million yen, offering a range of 180 kilometers. Honda's electric minicar, the N-ONE e:, starts at around 2.7 million yen. Compared with these models, the BYD Racco focuses on offering greater range capability while maintaining the compact dimensions required for Japan's kei vehicle regulations.
BYD's Expansion Strategy In Japan
The BYD Racco was originally unveiled in October 2025 and represents another BYD model developed specifically for international markets. Unlike several previous models, the company has not announced plans to introduce the vehicle in its domestic market in China. BYD previously followed a similar overseas-focused strategy with the Shark pickup launched in Mexico in May 2024 before later confirming plans to introduce the model in China.
BYD entered Japan's passenger vehicle market in July 2022 and started sales in January 2023 with the Atto 3, known as Yuan Plus in China. The company later announced plans to expand its Japanese lineup with additional hybrid models, including the Atto 2 and Seal 6. To support the Racco launch, BYD plans to establish smaller dealerships displaying one or two models in regional cities with fewer than 500,000 residents, targeting rural areas where compact EV demand is growing.
